Events By Sorrell: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your business.
Grace: I am a custom wedding cake and dessert artist. I’ve always had a passion for the culinary arts. After attending culinary school at The Culinary Institute of America, I spent time working in multiple custom dessert bakeries across the country. I’ve returned to New Hampshire and officially launched Graceful Baking. I’m excited to spend my time focusing on my clients and their creations.
EBS: Who is your ideal client?
Grace: I love a couple who knows what they want, and has a vision for their event. Colors, styles, themes, flowers, mood, and sentimental elements that they would like to see included. The most beautiful wedding cake designs begin with a couple’s clear vision for their event.
EBS: When you’re working with wedding clients, how do you typically work? What’s your experience like teaming up with wedding planners and other vendors?
Grace: It all starts with communication. Sometimes I hear directly from couples, and other times we are connected through event planners. I invite my couples with guests to an intimate in-person tasting and consultation to create an original one-of-a-kind design. Working with event planners keeps the process organized from start to finish, and makes me feel so supported. Working with other vendors always makes me excited for the final reveal on the day of the event!
EBS: Describe your style or aesthetic.
Grace: I’d say my cake decoration style is largely inspired by modern cake designs, with an emphasis on vintage florals. I’ve trained under master cake artists to learn the art of sugar flowers. These specialty flowers are rare and add romance, drama, and magical realism to my designs.
EBS: Who or what lights up your creative fire, both in your personal life and work?
Grace: I find inspiration in my surroundings. I love to go to museums, gardens, culinary experiences, and travel as often as I can. I also have a love for art including painting, needlework, and journaling. All these passions influence my style as an artist.
EBS: Tell us a bit about your creative process.
Grace: My creative process begins with a client’s vision, followed by developing flavor profiles and combinations. A sketch is developed after researching themes and techniques. Finally, I make everything by hand to execute the original vision.
EBS: What is your favorite way to unwind?
Grace: Some of my favorite ways to unwind are hot yoga classes, cooking dinner, fancy cocktails, and soaking in the sun with a book.
EBS: If you weren’t a custom wedding cake and dessert artist, what career path would you choose?
Grace: My career will always be focused on art and working with my hands. I have always loved the hospitality and food industry. I find great reward in teaching my knowledge to students and community members as a way of giving back. If I wasn’t a baker I would see myself as a culinary arts teacher.
